The Special Task Force (STF) of West Bengal Police began the New Year with a significant operation, arresting a man red-handed for smuggling Fake Indian Currency Notes (FICN) at Howrah Railway Station. The action, based on secret information, resulted in the recovery of counterfeit notes worth ₹92,000.
According to a statement by the Kolkata Police's STF, on Wednesday afternoon, their team intercepted a suspicious individual on a platform at Howrah Railway Station. Upon conducting a thorough search, the officers recovered two bundles of ₹500 notes hidden in a polythene bag. After examination, it was confirmed that the notes were counterfeit, amounting to a total of ₹92,000.
The accused, identified as Munna (30), is a resident of Suti in Murshidabad district. During interrogation, Munna admitted to acquiring the fake notes from Malda district, a known hub for counterfeit currency operations. He further revealed his plan to sell the notes outside West Bengal to earn substantial profits.
A case has been registered at the Howrah GRP police station under Section 179/180 of the Indian Justice Code, 2023. The police suspect an interstate smuggling network and are investigating the involvement of others connected to the racket.
STF Superintendent of Police Indrajit Basu addressed the press on Thursday afternoon, stating, "This operation has exposed a critical link in a larger network of counterfeit currency smuggling. The network spans West Bengal and other states. We are working tirelessly to uncover the entire operation, and more arrests are expected based on the leads provided by the accused."
